ToneTune 1.2

ToneTune 1.2 Help

ToneTune is a versatile multiple tuning fork for setting up and tuning stringed instruments. Many different tunings are included, covering common guitar tunings and quite a few instrument tunings from around the world. The tunings are based on equal temperament.

What It Does

ToneTune can help you tune the strings on your instrument to the correct pitch without searching through books or the web. Simply select your instrument and tuning, and tap the graphic to get the right pitch for each string. It can even play all the notes in sequence, as many times as you like.

You can also pick individual pitches to play over 10 octaves.

The best sound reproduction will be achieved by connecting your iPhone or iPod touch to a sound system. Be careful that the volume is set low enough so as to not damage your equipment!

To Begin

When you first open ToneTune you will see a standard 6-string guitar tuning. The horizontal golden-colored lines represent the strings and the left-hand vertical white line represents the nut (Open).

When you tap on a string/nut intersection, the correct pitch for that open string will sound, allowing you to tune the string by ear. A yellow dot will remind you of the string you've chosen. Tapping the yellow dot will stop the sound.

The right-hand vertical grey line represents the next octave up, which can be used for setting intonation.

You can set the playing time for the note in the Preferences (Prefs/Help tab: Playing Time), and any delay before the note sounds (Prefs/Help tab: Delay Before Play) so you can get ready.

To the left of the word Open is an arrowed circle symbol which indicates that ToneTune will cycle through the strings from low to high as many times as you have it set for in the Preferences (Tab tab: Tab Cycling).

The Vol slider controls the output volume.

In the upper-left of the screen is an indicator of the base frequency. By default it is set at 440 hertz, but can be set between 350 hertz and 500 hertz in the Preferences (Prefs/Help tab: A4 Base Freq.). All pitch frequencies will be formulated from this base number.

To Change the Instrument and Tuning

To change the instrument/tuning, tap the Tunings tab on the bottom. The Tunings page will appear, and you can scroll with a flick of your finger to the desired Tuning.

All the instrument tunings are in alphabetical order. You can change the order of the Tunings by using the 'drag-and-drop' feature by tapping first on the Arrange button, and then 'dragging and dropping'.

To get back to the Tab (strings) page with your selected tuning, just tap on the grey arrow to the left of the Tuning name, or tap on the Tuning to highlight it, and tap on the Tab tab at the bottom.

We have selected a variety of international stringed instruments as a starting point, with an emphasis on guitars. We would like to encourage our users to submit tunings for all kinds of stringed instruments. Be sure that the tunings are in octave format; either ASA (A4) or Helmholtz (a'). (Please note that all Tunings submissions will be checked against public domain information, and that Stanton Studio cannot compensate users for their submissions if used in ToneTune. Thanks.)

To Play a Single Note

For situations where you just want a single note to be played, such as in a concert tuning or a acoustic room test, tap on the Notes tab. There are 128 notes from C-1 up to G9 (MIDI 0 to 127). please note neither your iPhone, iPod Touch nor sound system can reproduce all of these pitches, but they are included for comprehensiveness.

To find a note, scroll with a finger flick, and to play it, simply tap on the line. The note will play according to the Preferences settings, and you can stop it by tapping the line again.

Both the the ASA and Helmholtz notes are listed, as is the frequency (according to the base setting). On the far right the standard MIDI note numbers are shown for the benefit of MIDI guitarists (please note that not all MIDI device manufacturers follow the standard MIDI note numbering guidelines).

Preferences and Help

The current languages for ToneTune are English and Spanish. ToneTune will default to the current language set under Settings > General > International > Languages.

The A4 Base Frequency can be adjusted with the arrows in 1 hertz (hz) increments. The default setting is 440 hertz. (Range: 350-500)

The Playing Time for each note can be adjusted in seconds. (Range: 1-30)

The Delay Before Playing is the time between when the screen is tapped to the sounding of the note, in 1 second increments. (Range: 0-10)

The Tab Cycling is number of times the sequential note cycle is played. By default, there is a 1/2-second pause between strings. (Range: 1-10)

For the Tab and Tunings pages, you can select either ASA or Helmholtz octave display.
