Not to be confused with the Mississippi Delta further upstream, the river delta forms as sediment is carried out to the mouth of the Great River where it flows into the ocean. The sediment is dropped as the force of the water can no longer carry it. Over time, the delta keeps extending outward. However, the Mississippi River Delta is shrinking due to dams and water diversion which reduce the amount of sediment in the river, so the natural forces of erosion, such as hurricanes, are dominant.
The Maps-Un-Natural™ series could also be called Psychedelic Maps. These are an effort to create a visually stunning and interesting image, usually with a limited color palette. The coloration varies only with elevation and often brings out notable landscape features.
